Home design trends/mixups for 2019

By Melissa Dorman, July 3, 2019

Summer is here! You’ve finally made it through spring cleaning, annual home maintenance, the circus that is the end of the school year, and maybe even a home purchase…..So now what?
With this new found free time and 4th of July deals around the corner, it’s time to shop.  The change in season  (Especially in Oregon) will be bringing a ton of extra light, filtering into your home in new and interesting ways. This is an optimal time to play with new colors patterns and designs. It can refresh not only your old shabby rooms but can also change your attitude and perception giving you the recharge you need to power through next winter.
This is all well and good but we don’t all have a million dollars to blow on new decor for the whole house. That’s why below I’m going to give you some recent home design trends and style tips that can make a large impact on your spaces!
#1 Change your lighting.
DUH…. No, but seriously. The impact lighting has on a room is critical. Switching out your more standard “Cookie Cutter” fixtures to something unique can serve as a major statement piece in your home. Going for a more artisanal or costume fixture look doesn’t have to be more expensive. Thrift stores, vintage shops, or even repurposing your current fixtures will do the trick. Consider switching out the colors or shades.
#2 Bring the outside in
I’m talking plants people! Plants are not only a great design accessory but studies have shown that plants can naturally enhance your mood. They also help filter the air in your house and who doesn’t like clean air……. Before I cause the murder of countless houseplant from you less then green-thumbed readers….. Might I suggest Cacti/ air plant? Playing with fun pots, placement, or designing your own floral arrangements can be a fun and easy way to mix things up.
#3 Floral Patterns
Ohhh to those trends that never die ha. Floral is back like it never left. With this trend resurfacing I’m happy to say there has been a lot of modernizing done to give this look some new wind in its sails. Playing with proportions, sizing, and bright colors can create a lot of visual interest.
#4 Accent Metals
Playing with new metals can give your space some edge. Rose gold was extremely popular in 2018. Newer trends in 2019 include Brass and Copper accents. Think curtain rods, cabinet hardware, picture frames, coffee table accessories. Little goes a long way here!

She/They

Ten years ago, Melissa was living in a slum in Kolkata, India, helping over 200 women escape sex trafficking by providing alternative work at a social business. It was there she discovered her passion for financial education as a means of empowering people to move out of poverty. After graduating from UCLA with a Masters, Melissa spent 5 years working as a Social Worker; assisting clients facing homelessness, in jail, or at a psychiatric facility. As much as she loved the work, imagining saving for retirement on the meager salary of a social worker was becoming grim. That's when Melissa discovered "passive income." In no time, she fell in LOVE with real estate as a vehicle for wealth. Soon after, Melissa began locating off-market multi-family properties to purchase through creative financing strategies and win-win opportunities. Two years into investing, Melissa quit her day job as a Social Worker to become a full-time broker and investor. Initially, she was drawn to people in difficult circumstances, so she developed extensive experience assisting families facing foreclosure, short sales, and probate. Melissa is well versed in helping her clients overcome complex real estate challenges. Currently, Melissa is teamed up with Super Broker, Yascha Noonberg at Living Room Realty. Together they assist clients to achieve their real estate dreams, including how to strategically buy and sell a personal residence to maximize profits. Far from the slums of Kolkata, her greatest passion now is empowering other working professionals to develop passive forms of income through buying multi-family properties in Portland.
