When I have my first sit down with buyer clients, one of the questions I ask is “what is your wish list?”. For clients with children, undoubtedly, one of the high priorities is good schools. The number one resource clients typically cite for a good school is the school’s rating on Great Schools or the general reputation of the school. To me, what makes a school great is so subjective. What is important to one person is not always a priority for another. So how do you make a good decision when it comes down to purchasing a home in an area with a school that will be a good fit for your family? For my clients, I encourage them to tour the school. Obviously, this is difficult to do when you are just beginning a house hunt, but once you have narrowed things down, it is a good idea to get inside the school and see it for yourself.
I recently had clients that were considering purchasing a home in a new school district. Schools were a top priority for their family and was going to be a huge deciding factor. I was lucky enough to have some teacher contacts inside the elementary school that were willing to have a phone conversation with my clients. My clients then followed up with a tour of the elementary school, as well as the high school. Seeing the schools for themselves really helped them make the decision to move forward with their purchase.
If schools are a high priority for you, I encourage you to do your due diligence by going beyond the numbers and getting inside the schools to ensure it’s a good fit for you.
