Between rainy days and occasional snow-pocalypses, winter time brings a number of days indoors. I know that one of my least favorite feelings come from seeing a pile of old devices or opening that drawer that has all the “I-don’t-know-what-this-is” bits. I have long theorized that homes have a “black-hole” space, one nook or closet of any home which hosts so many “some-day” items or scraps, that you don’t wish to spend too much time there because you know that the scientific constraints of time consumed while investigating these collections begins to defy our understanding.
Undoubtedly, spring cleaning holds a space in our minds as a time for polishing up the interiors and exteriors of our homes, spring cleaning can only be made easier after taking a swing at stockpiled holiday decorations, inundated devices, and lingering craft/repair projects. Let’s get to it!
When you were putting together your festive displays, there was something that came across your reach which you decided wasn’t showing up this year. There’s a chance this isn’t the first year these items were overlooked, and every year you think “maybe next year”. Why do you hold on to it? Sentiment, guilt, value… Take a moment and contemplate these decorations. What holiday knick-knacks or decor sat out or got replaced this year? Does it need repair, or does it no longer serve you? Can you let it go?
How many of us have a box labeled, old computers or old kitchen gadgets? I know that I’ve found an ice-cream maker days after having contemplated buying an ice-cream maker after watching an online clip showing how fun making ice-cream can be. Somewhere in your home is a device that is on the fringe of completely inundated use, how many days will you need to hold onto this device before the probability of using the device is overtaken by your likelihood of needing a more advanced version?
What crafty rabbit-holes have you dipped more than a toe into, just deep enough to acquire a tub of materials, adhesives, stains, paints, brushes..? Take a look around your craft room and collect the scrap pieces and see if any inspire a renewed interest in spending more time deepening your skills. Take a moment of confidence in aligning your ability to create more of what you make space for, what crafts will you undertake when you have space to embrace it. Can you make room in your home through releasing tubs of crafting supplies?
Deciding where to take your released belongings can be a fun adventure. In this realm, Google can be your friend, finding the nearest drop-off for variable items also comes with the joy of directing generosity. Some items are beyond reuse, and that is a line which you will have to draw for yourself.
