This holiday season I have been trying to learn more ways I can have a smaller footprint. Here are my top tips that I adopted this year!
Christmas Trees
Get a real (non-flocked) tree from a sustainable farm.
Did you know you can cut down your Christmas tree in our very own Mt Hood National Forest?!
Check out Mt Hood’s website for tips on finding your tree and instructions on getting your $5 permit.
At the end of the season, properly recycle your tree. Oregon Metro provides information on how to recycle your tree in your area.
Home
Consider making the switch to LED holiday lights.
- Use 90% less electricity
- Longer lasting – less light strands in the landfill!
Reuse decorations, make your own, or buy secondhand.
Source local ingredients for holiday meals and support local farmers.
Shopping & Gifts
Buy intentionally!
- Avoid cheap stocking stuffers
- Support local businesses
- Consider gifting experiences instead of things
- Make your own gifts
Use sustainable/Alternative gift wrap such as cotton fabric.
Do a gift swap to clear clutter after the holidays.
Out & About
Attending any parties and needing festive apparel? Borrow, shop secondhand, or rent your festive fit!
Support local distilleries, breweries, etc. for your holiday drinks.
