Sellers Go but the Cat Stays?

On Friday my client, Jorge, closed on a home purchase.  He’d been looking at homes in one particular area of town for his family to move into.  He’s an investor by trade so he wanted a fixer that he could make his own and we finally found that home back in December.

I walk a lot of terrible-looking fixers and I have a pretty strong stomach for gross (if I do say so myself).  However, I had a really hard time the first time we walked this house.  The family that lived in it were hoarders and the smell was something I’ve never experienced before.  It was AWFUL.  Despite this, Jorge knew he had found the one.  We wrote an offer that was well under asking since they were priced extremely high for what they had.  After several weeks of negotiating we finally came to terms.  One of the things that Jorge agreed to was that he’d be willing to clean the property for the sellers- a big task if you ask me!

Last week the sellers loaded up three huge trucks (two more than they thought they needed) to get all of their stuff out of the property and Jorge took possession.  There were still some items left around the lot, as had been agreed to.

What hadn’t been agreed to was the cat.

That’s right: the sellers left their cat at the house.  Maybe, with all that stuff in there, they didn’t even know they still had a live cat roaming around?  It’s hard to believe that anyone would leave behind an animal when moving out of state.  However, Jorge walked into his new home on Sunday and found a cat sitting there, waiting for him.
