Captain Salty’s Favorite Portland Dog Parks

By Lauren Hurley, April 27, 2018

Captain Salty, he sails the sea. But he also sails around Portland to find you the BEST dog parks!

Sellwood Riverfront Park

SE Spokane St & Oaks Pkwy | 8 acres | Unfenced

Technically, this park is off-leash only on the main lawn. If you head down to the river’s edge and walk along the water, many dogs are off-leash. If the beach is not packed with sun bathers and picnics, seems dogs are A-OK to enjoy off-leash beach runs and fetching sticks from the river. It’s a wonderfully peaceful and quiet place to be in the morning. Go greet the day!

M James Gleason Memorial Boat Ramp (& beach!)

4325 NE Marine Dr, Portland  | Long Beach | Unfenced

If you are there on a quiet, rainy weekday, off leash is possible. Walk down the beach far enough away from the parking lot.  Or for a nice walk along the river, leash up and hit the path.

You do have to pay $5 for parking.

Thousand Acres (Sandy River Delta Park)

Crown Point Hwy, Troutdale | 1,400 acres | Unfenced

Dog Dreamworld! There is something for every dog at Sandy River. Wide and expansive, with fields and rivers and lots of mud. Bring your runner dogs, your swimmer dogs, your slow dogs and bring towels!

Fernhill Park

6010 NE 37th Ave. |  26 acres | Unfenced

Fernhill is a grand dog park. Rolling green hills and great early evening light. Many dog parks don’t lend themselves to humans sitting down, but Fernhill is different. Find a sunny spot on the grassy hill and face the sun while your dog zooms around in this wide open space. It’s a great position to observe the dogs. Enjoy the show.

Hillsdale Dog Park

SW 27th Avenue and Hillsdale Highway |  5.17 Acres | Unfenced

Hillsdale dog park is hidden gem. I discovered it when living in the Maplewood Neighborhood in SW Portland. It is easy breezy to pull up to and let the dogs out, dead end parking lot right behind the Portland Christian Center. The path that wraps around the entire dog park allows dog owners to keep moving and take walk while the dogs play.

Council Crest

SW Council Crest Dr | 44 acres | Unfenced

One of the highest points in the City of Portland, Council Crest Park is a great place for views of Mt Hood, Ranier, Adams and St Helens, too. Go around the crown to the west side of the hill, and capture views of the valley looking west. Bring your dog and a picnic and watch the sunset from here.

Mount Tabor

6336 SE Lincoln St. |  4 Acres | Unfenced

Another gem in Portland, Mount Tabor. Whether you are running the stairs, out for a Sunday stroll, or getting Fido a little outdoor time, there’s always adventure waiting on Mt Tabor.

Great city views, too!
