Hi Readers,
First, sending you a hug and compassion as we navigate these important, hard times.
When I was part of the marketing team at Dave’s Killer Bread, I had my eyes opened to and learned more about recidivism. Did you know the U.S. houses more than 20% of the world’s prison population even though we are only 4% of the global population? Many of the individuals being held in our prisons are there for non-violent crimes. And, that unless people are provided a second chance, often their likelihood of being able to enter back to society with a criminal background, find a job paying living wages and a home they can afford or even qualify to rent is slim. For many, the choice for re-entry literally is one they aren’t offered, nor they cannot afford, so they turn back to the way of life that got them in trouble and end up back in prison.
It’s a devastating cycle.
That’s why organizations like Portland’s own Dave’s Killer Bread are integral to helping people get solid footing. If you don’t know the full story of the history of the brand, definitely check it out. Inspiring, indeed. They provide stable jobs with benefits. Opportunities for careers advancements. Tools to learn the crafted trade. Resources to help with addiction or needed counseling. And, most of all, hope.
Recently I was contacted by one of my former colleagues, looking to purchase a condo for their son. He’d made a bad decision, ended up in prison, and had been recently released. If it weren’t for his supportive family, and second chance employment, he wouldn’t have much of a chance to start over. I’m thrilled to say that within a week we found a great home for this family — which includes an incredible 3 year old spitfire of a kiddo — to start a new life. I appreciate so much the opportunity to have been a small part.
Doing the right thing is not often what’s easy. But we can also do hard things.
Hugs,
