Sunday Parkways, one of Portland’s greatest summer cycling and outdoor fun offerings, isn’t happening in person this year. While we dream of future summers with crowds, live music, and food vendors, there is still a lot to love about Portland by bike in the present. Luckily, the weather is still amazing and Portland is lucky to have great bike infrastructure. Pull your bike out of the garage and show your Neighborhood Greenways some love.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation has a great map of recommended rides around Portland. You can go big with their Big Eastside Loop (a whopping 51 miles!) or their Skyline / Sauvie Island ride for a scenic getaway (32-45 Miles). However, it is not all about distance. There are plenty of short and sweet neighborhood rides that are perfect for a warm weekend afternoon.
Take their Northeast Ramble, for example. Bonus: It’s mostly flat! Start anywhere along this route – you could even begin from Living Room’s very own NE office – and you’ll encounter some of the best NE Portland has to offer. You will see some of the Alberta Arts District, some stately Irvington homes along Tillamook, and the winding curves of Alameda ridge. I am especially fond of the portion just north of the Rose City Golf course – I recently spent quite a bit of time with clients in that area and it is a perfect spot to ride and enjoy a little nature. Plus, if you feel like a challenge or just want to wave at Mt. Hood you can swerve off right after the golf course for an optional climb up Rocky Butte.
Check out the rest of the routes on the PBOT website.
Portland shines in the summer. Get out there any enjoy it!
