When I first got into real estate I was not a fan of flag-lots*. They always seemed crowed and not a good use of property. Then in 2012 I sold one to a friend and got to see how they utilized it; this really changed my perspective. If you’ve got kids, that long driveway becomes your personal playground for riding bikes, riding skateboards, doing chalk art and hosting birthday parties. Now whenever I have a buyer that scoffs at a flag lot, I always insist that we at least go for a look.
My clients Lizzi & Jeff just closed on a sweet property in Milwaukie with a flag lot. The yard configuration gives a great buffer from the street and creates a private space. The long driveway will provide years of entertainment and the odd scraped knee for the kids. Here’s to flag-lots!!
*A flag-lot is usually carved out of the back yard of larger property that fronts on the street. The flag pole becomes the driveway and the flag is where the house sits.
