Bookmas 2022!

By Constance Rigney, November 29, 2022

This season always seems like a good time to make gift suggestions, and guess what we are suggesting?……BOOKS!

And, more specifically, graphic novels.

Graphic novels are a great way to get reluctant readers engaged with reading, encourage the blending of visual and literary arts, and perhaps most importantly, offer an accessible way to explore topics that can be beneficial, but tricky for kids to talk about.

We looked to The Experts (our children) to provide you with a list of graphic novels that they have reported to be meaningful, helpful, or just plain hilarious:

For those who love to learn about strange and interesting topics: Science Comics https://us.macmillan.com/series/sciencecomics

Topics include: the brain, crows, dinosaurs, plagues, and so much more!

There are so many amazing graphic novels that touch on topics that kids can relate to, but may not always have words for:

Speak Up by Rebecca Burgess https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/59856049-speak-up A novel about a middle schooler who learns to speak up for herself.

Carlos Gomez Freestyles…..Heavy On The Style by Chuck Gonzalez https://www.benchmarkeducation.com/reycraftbooks/nl6035-carlos-gomez-freestyles-heavy-on-the-style-trade-book-hardcover.html

A book about not fitting in but finding and embracing your style.

New Kid and Class Act by Jerry Craft https://www.librarything.com/work/22398610/reviews/213191458 These books cover tough topics like racism, cultural misunderstandings, and microagressions, but also have hilarious moments, positive messaging, and are very relatable.

Growing Pangs by Kathryn Ormsbee https://clubs.scholastic.com/growing-pangs/9781338861563-rco-us.html, Just Roll With It by Veronica Agarwal https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/56904988-just-roll-with-it, and Stepping Stones and Apple Crush by Lucy Knisley https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/42424403-stepping-stones

are all books that help broach the subjects of anxiety and/or OCD

For those who are just looking for hilarious reads with great artwork, check out Donut The Destroyer by Sarah Graley https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/donut-the-destroyer-sarah-graley/1132647542 or Apprentice Lord of Darkness by Cédric Asna https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/59365063-apprentice-lord-of-darkness

Happy Reading!!
