I wish I could say these were my Chemistry teachers when I was getting my minor in College. Who are they, actually?
These excellently named scientists are all staff educators at Mad Science, a science enrichment program for kids. The program was founded in 1985 by two brothers with a hobby of conducting spectacular science experiments at home. Kids in their neighborhood started to take notice of the “fun science” happening down the street and then the brothers’ passion for science grew into a thriving business with locations across the country.
Odds are those of you with kids have spent more time than you could have ever anticipated watching slime tutorials on YouTube. I have two young kids. I’ve helped them make slime (it was actually pretty fun). The best thing about the slime trend? Now I know they love science experiments! I just need to diversify the types of home science we know how to do – that’s where Mad Science comes in.
Mad Science offers a whole range of at-home activities to keep kids engaged with fun hands-on science learning. First there’s the free content like coloring sheets and a whole range of amazing at-home experiments. Then there’s guided virtual programing where kids are provided materials and taught by one of the well-named scientists. The team at Portland Mad Science has also restructured their in-person offerings for COVID safety and offer an in-person School Support camp to assist students in completing distance learning tasks.
Making science fun keeps kids motivated with distance learning, gets them excited about a subject that can seem intimidating, and gives them something to do when bored at home.
Portland’s Mad Science HQ is on North Ainsworth just off of Interstate. Check them out.
