Hidden Gem for Urban Birders in Cedar Hills

By Living Room Realty, July 16, 2021

The Commonwealth Lake Park in the Cedar Hills neighborhood of Beaverton is a tranquil escape in an otherwise bustling suburban neighborhood. Just off of Highway 26, the park offers bird enthusiasts the opportunity to see some of Oregon’s most beautiful species. You might be lucky enough to spot a Great Blue Heron poised patiently at the shoreline. The Pied-Bill Grebe, a typically shy species, makes regular appearances at the park. There are plenty of domestic ducks and geese, mallards, wigeons, coots, and buffleheads to spot too.

While the bird watching is great, Commonwealth Lake Park has a lot more to offer! Amateur anglers can catch fish in the man-made pond, perfect for kids just learning to fish. There is a paved trail around the entire perimeter for leisurely strolls, and many grassy areas to have a picnic and do some old-fashioned people watching.

So while there are countless natural wonders and parks in Portland and the surrounding areas, I’m grateful to have a little urban park like Commonwealth when I need a quick escape.
