Developer Highlight: Green Canopy Node

By Jené DeSpain, January 5, 2022

As green building and sustainable innovation become staple desires for modern buyers, their dedication to Net Zero energy residential development with state of the art aesthetic design makes Green Canopy a stand alone leader in the new construction community. With purposeful growth as a core value, Green Canopy founder Sam Lai is setting a new bar in residential building. Portland, Bend, and Seattle are a few of the cities fortunate to have been selected for the recent series of Green Canopy’s projects. Over the last few weeks, I’ve had the absolute honor of helping some very special buyers secure the last home in Green Canopy’s Woodstock dwellings. From the motion operated energy saving lights to the custom flooring, every detail reflects the attention and intentions of these architects.
From their mission statement, we can discover the personalization of Green Canopy’s dedication:

“Homes are the nexus of our lives. They provide for our most basic needs of shelter, safety, and security. They are also a place where one can develop a sense of love, belonging, acceptance with friends and family, and even be a space to achieve one’s highest potential in life.

Homes also sit at the nexus of some of our greatest societal challenges – climate, affordability, and sprawl.

Green Canopy NODE is on a mission to change the current paradigm of development and housing by addressing the complex challenges within the industry itself.”

Green Canopy was recently awarded Earth Advantage’s “Builder of the Month”. In their feature article about the company, Earth Advantage describes Green Canopy’s stance as;

“Green Canopy is the only for-profit homebuilder (that we know of) in the United States that was deliberately started to combat climate change and resource scarcity via in-city homebuilding. Based in Portland and Seattle, the company’s mission is to build homes, relationships, and businesses that help regenerate communities and environments. Backed by over 70 impact investors, Green Canopy has successfully sold over 200 third party certified, deep green, Net Zero energy, healthy homes in the Pacific Northwest since 2009.

Meeting the challenge of global warming and the housing crisis requires disruptive, integrated, and inclusive solutions. Green Canopy is a fully integrated development firm including Net Zero energy residential development, general contracting, and fund management. Green Canopy’s goal in building all-electric, healthy homes is to help spark a transformation toward a more sustainable and resilient housing market.”

As the daughter of a sustainable contractor raised here in Portland’s environment of ecological focus, it has been personally meaningful to have a transaction with such incredible craftsmen who’s pursuit of creating homes holds a shared cultural identity towards a future forward mindset. Connecting my buying clients with homes that meet an array of their wishlist features is a powerfully wonderful aspect of my career. When those client dreams of sustainability are able to align with what is accessible on the market, each of us working within our local real estate society achieves a closer reach towards an industry anchored in longevity and success.
