Multi-generational living is not a new concept, especially in other parts of the world where many generations might share the same roof, but hasn’t been a common lifestyle choice for Americans. Historically, we tend to consider the “individual” first over community. This is neither right or wrong, just an American trait. Even before covid shined a light on the importance of family and home, we’ve been seeing a shift in this thinking however. With the growing popularity of the ADU (accessory dwelling unit) we are seeing more and more families coming together to pool resources to make each other’s lives better. Parents being near to help with grandkids, kids supporting older parents, siblings increasing their buying power by purchasing a home together. We love this idea!
My heart skipped a beat when I got a call from Jim. He and I go way back. I lived across the street from his sister, brother in law, nephew and his niece who is my age and my BFF growing up. Jim was the super fun uncle who would come over, crack jokes with us kids and play tag all day with us. It’s always an honor to help someone make a move, but I have to admit it felt extra special to get a call from fun ‘Uncle Jim.” He shared with me that he and his family were going to make a move toward living together in a multi-generational style. They are getting close to retirement, and see the benefit of being helpful hands-on grandparents, and also being in a position to receive help in the future if needed. JIm, Tracy and the girls were buying a house together!
What none of us expected was for them to find the perfect place so quickly. Walking is very important to them, so location was critical. Not long after we connected, a home came up that is adjacent to a park and miles of walking trails. A very nice home with gathering space, plenty of rooms and bathrooms, and enough elbow room to get some alone time if needed. The seller accepted an offer as we were viewing the house, but none of us were deterred. They wrote a strong back up offer, and we made sure the listing agent understood how perfect this home was for this family! In two days time, we got the call that they moved up to first position and the house was theirs! Everyone was elated. Now they have the keys and, their futures together in front of them!
Congrats Jim, Tracy, Nikki and Jaime!!! We are so very happy to see your dreams coming true!
