One of the best things about Portland is you can be out running errands and decide to pop up and do a quick hike in the middle of the city. A jaunt up Mt. Tabor is an obvious way to burn off some morning donuts found on Hawthorne, and Powell Butte Nature Park is ideal if you want a quick escape to 600+ wide open acres. You can even bring your horse!
The city officially established Powell Butte as a nature park in 1987. It opened to the public in 1990 and is managed by Portland Parks & Recreation.
Today, there are miles of trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Keep an eye out for abundant wildlife, including rabbits, ring-necked pheasants, ground squirrels, raccoons, gray foxes, skunks, bats, chipmunks, coyotes, and black-tailed mule deer.
