Beaverton kind of gets a bad rap. Inner Portland dwellers love hatin’ on the NW suburb, but I gotta tell you, it’s got it’s charms. My favorite thing is the Uwajimaya Asian Market, which I make a point to stop at when I’m on that side of town.
Uwajimaya has been around since 1928 and has a really interesting history. From it’s humble beginnings in Tacoma to it’s reopening after the owners were sent to a Japanese internment camp in 1942 to it’s rapid rise in popularity after the 1964 World’s Fair, it celebrated 90 years of business last fall. It’s been a family-run business for it’s entire breadth and now includes multiple locations, bookstores, and a cooking school where you can learn to make amazing authentic asian cuisine. The entire history is available HERE, and I highly recommend giving it a read.
In addition to great produce, Uwajimaya carries a whole host of delicious Asian snacks and pantry items, home goods, beauty products(have you gotten on the Korean skincare train yet?), and a massive frozen food section which has all the postsitckers and bao you could ever dream of. They also have a fresh deli area filled with freshly prepared sushi, seaweed salad, bibimbap bowls, and multiple varieties of musubi. In my humble opinion, musubi is the perfect snack to keep a busy REALTOR® from getting hangry. Trust me, I’ve done the road testing on that.
So the next time someone brings up Beaverton, instead of envisioning car lots, instead think about all the tasty treats waiting for you at Uwajumaya!
