Yes – Portland has great proximity to the coast, mountains, forests…even wine country! But…protecting these assets has also put limits on outward growth. Existing housing is limited, new construction isn’t keeping up with demand and strong population growth have created a housing shortage…
…this is pushing rents up in Portland, and while rents may seem high to Portlanders, they are looking pretty good to someone moving here from…Silicon Valley, for instance.
And…increased demand for housing pushes up rental rates as well as property values. Compared to Seattle and San Francisco – Portland looks like a bargain to people looking to migrate.
There is a strong Portland housing market for students in the vicinity of multiple major campuses – throughout the Portland area and extending down-valley to Eugene, as well.
…which in turn increases the demand for housing. Add in the proximity of outdoor activities and a thriving music and art scene – it’s no wonder so many people are moving to Portland (and looking for housing.)
