5 Ways To Stay Positive When Buying Or Selling Your House

By Melissa Dorman, November 26, 2018

As a regular consumer when planning to buy or sell a house, one might have to face countless challenges — don’t let negativity be one of them.

You could be equipped with every tool known to man — the latest apps and technology, the best agent you can find, a list of referrals etc. — but if you don’t have the right mindset… none of it matters.

A good mindset is the biggest challenge.

When you are trying to buy or sell the house, you will have to face challenges on daily basis. Whether it’s a delayed contractor, a failed sewer scope, or simply a multiple offer situation on your dream home; it can all be roller coaster of emotion. Starting with the right attitude will set you up for success and also finding the right agent who can take all the responsibilities off of your shoulder, is key!

As a normal person, our brain is programmed to stay in familiar surroundings and it fears new challenges. Our brain can easily get threatened with any idea of change. One has to overcome all these mental huddles before proceeding to buy or sell the house.

Whatever challenges come in front of you, don’t get negativity to affect you and always push yourself to step out of your comfort zone. To help you with this, here are 5 ways to make sure you are in right mindset to be a perfect buyer or seller.

1) Gratitude is Key.

There are always many things in everyone’s life to be grateful for; make sure to appreciate whatever things that have gone your way in this process. Don’t focus on the imperfections. Focus on what has gone well. This not only makes people in your feel happy but it also releases dopamine which fills us with positive energy and enthusiasm.

2) Don’t be afraid to try something new.

Fear of something new can mentally impair people’s mind enough to slow or even stop them from achieving their goals. To overcome this fear, one should spend time visualizing success in advance. Seriously, it sounds cheesy, but stop and imagine it all working out. How would you feel? How would it change your life? Then use that “happy place” to anchor you each time problems arise. Use positive visualization to overcome fears as they come up. We deserve as much as we hold in our imagination for ourselves. Dream big!

3) Preparation is key for success.

Abraham Lincoln said once, “If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

With the right preparation and planning, anything is possible to achieve. Selling or buying a home is a HUGE milestone. It’s best to prepare mentally and consult with your broker to create a game plan far in advance. Procrastination will only create problems down the road. Instead, lean into the fear and get to work early.

4) Celebrate small wins.

One should make micro-goals and celebrate each accomplishment. Surround yourself with friends who will cheer you along.

This also gives you the right momentum to push you forward positively at your bigger goals, which can take more time. Enjoy little things till you find a big one.

5) Stay happy.

Not only this will make others feel good, but it will also put you in a better mood as well. Happiness multiplies like wildfire, so share it with people.

Being happy, not only  makes challenges much easier, but also it shows how calm and cool your personality is, so stay happy. It literally costs nothing.

She/They

Ten years ago, Melissa was living in a slum in Kolkata, India, helping over 200 women escape sex trafficking by providing alternative work at a social business. It was there she discovered her passion for financial education as a means of empowering people to move out of poverty. After graduating from UCLA with a Masters, Melissa spent 5 years working as a Social Worker; assisting clients facing homelessness, in jail, or at a psychiatric facility. As much as she loved the work, imagining saving for retirement on the meager salary of a social worker was becoming grim. That's when Melissa discovered "passive income." In no time, she fell in LOVE with real estate as a vehicle for wealth. Soon after, Melissa began locating off-market multi-family properties to purchase through creative financing strategies and win-win opportunities. Two years into investing, Melissa quit her day job as a Social Worker to become a full-time broker and investor. Initially, she was drawn to people in difficult circumstances, so she developed extensive experience assisting families facing foreclosure, short sales, and probate. Melissa is well versed in helping her clients overcome complex real estate challenges. Currently, Melissa is teamed up with Super Broker, Yascha Noonberg at Living Room Realty. Together they assist clients to achieve their real estate dreams, including how to strategically buy and sell a personal residence to maximize profits. Far from the slums of Kolkata, her greatest passion now is empowering other working professionals to develop passive forms of income through buying multi-family properties in Portland.
