We just closed on the sale of this bungalow in Concordia, a place Stephanie, our seller called home for 18 years. This cozy property served her well, providing both the literal and creative space to make her art in the detached studio. I first met Stephanie in February when wonderful past clients, David and Melissa sent her my way. We met downtown for coffee and discussed the change she’d long been pondering. We parted with plans to talk again in March and meet up for a walk through at her property.
Well, we all know what ensued come March. Our next meeting didn’t happen until May. Much had changed since February–the world, really. The COVID epidemic had universally touched everything. There was an immediate neighborhood change, too, what with the February announcement of the closing of Concordia University. A longtime anchor of the neighborhood, the school opened it’s doors in 1905 originally to serve the teachers and pastors of the Missouri based Lutheran Church. Evolving over time, it grew to offer a solid liberal arts education and a multitude of degree programs. The Concordia neighborhood was named for the university… and now with it’s closure, residents are taking up the question of whether to change the name of the neighborhood association. There is uncertainty as people watch to see what the 24 acre campus will become. No matter what they call it, what is certain to remain the same is the vibrancy of the neighborhood.
We eventually listed the property in late September and quickly received multiple offers. A sweet couple who were the right match has now taken up stewardship. Stephanie is focused on acquiring her next home, a welcome look forward as she closes this long and lovely chapter. She is both sad to leave and excited about what’s to come, proof again that a place can be wonderful and still be time to leave.
