We just closed the sale of this vintage gem on Division! Sellers purchased it in 2012 from the same family who owned it for 70+ years. It was a bit rough then, mechanically maintained but cosmetically untouched. Much changed in their eight years of ownership both with the house which was loved well by my sellers and with the surrounding neighborhood. Division evolved into a more bike & pedestrian friendly street, reducing vehicular traffic from four to two lanes. The fixer house to the west was demolished and a new construction single family home built in it’s place. The empty lot to the east is now in process with a new construction duplex.
Much has changed in the lives of the occupants, too. My sweet couple were dating at the time of purchase. The following year, I attended their wedding in Mt. Tabor Park. A successful home daycare took place there for years. They had their two kids, Tillie and Kit in the Division home…and now, a third baby is on the way.
Houses are appreciated for a myriad of reasons–their architectural appeal, the flow of the space and it’s useful floorplan, for example…but it’s really the people who bring meaning to the true purpose of the building. The living make their imprint on structures in sweeping passages like childbirth and death but it is the everyday living, the breathing in and breathing out of life that fuels the energy of a home. I liken it to a theatre where the building and stage having little resonance until the actors, director, designers, stage crew bring their magic, their very Lives to the empty space.
In this sweet, nurturing place on Division life expanded and the house extended itself to accommodate the growth. Now it’s time for new people to inject their energy into this home. I know my sellers would say that the house on Division will give back to the new owners as it good as it gets and then some.
