“We are stuck in Mexico.” That’s not the phrase an agent wants to hear when the inspection deadline is looming.
Let me back up: Anna-Jael and Evan are two of the most easygoing people that I have ever worked with. Evan is a talented woodworker and Anna-Jael is an interior designer with a great eye. Because they are so creative they were able to look past the surface of the houses we toured and visualize what they would do with the bones.
We only toured a couple of houses together before they found THE ONE: an adorable vintage bungalow in Roseway with the most incredible garden! We fought through a competitive situation to get their offer accepted. They were thrilled! But there was a problem: they were going on vacation to Mexico next week. Just for a few days, though. They’d be back for sure before negotiations needed to start in earnest during their inspection period. Famous last words!
We had the inspection done right before they needed to leave for their trip and the report revealed a couple of really big ticket items. “Not to worry,” I said. I would get bids for repairs while they were gone and we’d talk when they got back. Everything would work out just fine.
Well, things often don’t go as planned in real estate. What was supposed to be a couple day long trip needed to be extended by several more. There were going to be long international flights and periods of no communication. Could we get this done before the deadline? They were stressing.
When things get tough I get to work, folks! I got the legwork done here: I reached out to contractors in my network and got multiple bids for each item. I stayed in close communication with the listing agent and built a solid case for getting what we needed done. With WhatsApp and Docusign at our disposal (thank goodness for technology!) we were able to work through this complicated scenario with Anna-Jael and Evan out of the country.
Anna-Jael and Evan got the keys to their new home on Friday. I’m so glad we were able to work through this challenge and have fun doing it!
