One of the most common questions I get as a real estate agent is how to best navigate the need for short-term housing in Portland. In the competitive market, buyers and sellers across the board are finding themselves at the whim of factors outside of their control: shifting budgets, tightening terms, and in particular, having to work around others’ timelines. As a result, the need for interim housing in between more permanent homes is a topic I’m seeing more regularly among my clients.
When a client approaches me about temporary housing in Portland, I like to offer a few suggestions:
Ask your realtor! A good realtor should be connected to a network of agents who may know of someone who is looking for a short-term tenant that could be just the right fit. Living Room Realty, in particular, has a property management leg of the brokerage that may also be able to assist in finding temporary housing. It’s always worth an ask, and a good realtor should be able to provide some good connections.
There are trusted websites that can provide excellent solutions for “extended stay” residences in Portland (rent on a weekly/monthly basis, rather than daily). A couple of vetted options that my clients have found success with include AirBnB and Furnished Finder.
Hire a local Rental/Relocation specialist. Sure, you may have to pay a small fee for their services – but hiring someone who is tapped into the rental market and can locate potential rentals for you, based on your unique needs, will save you a ton of stress and hopefully get you into the right place. From there, you can take a deep breath and get started on your house hunt with confidence.
These are just a few suggestions that you may want to consider if you find yourself needing ‘interim’ housing in Portland. The most important, of course, is that you equip yourself with a solid team of real estate professionals who are connected to the community of Portland and that are committed to going above and beyond to make your move as seamless as it can be. If you’ve already aligned yourself with a Living Room agent, you can rest assured that you’re headed in the right direction.
