Thirty years ago, yes, 30, I took my real estate exam. Things were so different! Individuals did not have computers, or even cell phones. Offers were presented in person, printed on paper – actual paper and signed with actual pens. Email was not a thing. We had faxes. Faxes printed on thermal paper. There were no radon tests or sewer scopes. Lots of people did not even get inspections. Many homes were less than $100K!
Several years later I got my first cell phone. It was a real classic, a Motorola that could double as a self defense weapon or a brick. It weighed a ton.
Forget having a smart phone, a tablet, lap top or even a desk top computer. We had the MLS book. When I started, Portland was served by OMLS, Oregon Multiple Listing service. RMLS, Regional Multiple Listing Service, started up shortly after I began my real estate career and for a little while the two competed. RMLS won and continues today. Back in the day, instead of doing a search online, you would flip through “the book”, browsing the black and white thumbnail photos and short descriptions of the available homes. New books, and thus new listings, came out every two weeks.
So many things have changed, but what has stayed the same is human connection. I’m still in touch with my first client, who is also celebrating a 30 year anniversary – 30 years in that home he bought from me way back then.
More than anything, as it sinks in that I have been helping Portlanders with their homes for three decades, I want to say thank you for all the people who have trusted me to be their guide. It has been awesome getting to know you. 2/23/91 I took the exam and started a career I never suspected would teach me all I have learned. Thirty years and still going strong.
