Welcome to an Oregon staple, the newly rebuilt Tillamook Creamery in Tillamook, OR. This creamery on the Oregon coast is a dairy enthusiast’s dream come true. With 38,500 square feet of behind-the-scenes cheesy goodness to explore, you could easily spend hours here learning about all the hard work that goes into your favorite dairy products.
A great place to bring the whole family, Tillamook offers free, self-guided tours through the facility. You’ll learn a little of Tillamook’s history (all 100+ years!) and some fun dairy facts for your next party. For example, Tillamook processes 1.6 million pounds of milk a day. A DAY! All that milk is made into something delicious within 24 hours, ensuring all of their products are as fresh as they can be. At the Farm Exhibit, you can let the kids run wild. They’ll see how the farmers care for the cows, how the milk is collected, and some of the modern technology that is improving how dairy cows are cared for. The kids can even try their hand at “feeding” a calf, and “milking” a cow on their own.
Next up is the viewing deck, where you can learn all about the actual cheese production. Watch as the cheesemakers test for the quality of the cheese, or watch them weigh and seal the blocks for aging. You’ll get a little taste of the entire process here. Another fun fact, Tillamook has some very special cheddars that are aged for 4+ years!
Check out the great gift shop, where you can spend your very own cheddar on Tillamook gear of all sorts. You’ll want to stock up on the freshest cheese curds (buy 2 bags, trust me), and that fancy aged white cheddar. If at this point you’re craving something melty, cheesy, and delicious, you should absolutely stop by the dining hall. Find the best grilled cheese, juicy burgers, macaroni and cheese, fried cheese curds, and more. End the tour with the all-time champion of dairy, ice cream. Here you might even be able to sample new flavors before they hit stores.
So if you are looking for a really gouda time, check out the Tillamook Creamery. Puns obviously required.
