We remember so much and so little.
We associate people and places with sense memories. Aunt Ida’s perfume. Wet socks. The theme song to an old TV show.
And we assign people in our lives with seemingly random iconography. Her hair, his accent, their car.
A client from five years ago recently asked me to help sell his house I’d helped him buy. When his number came up on my phone, warm thoughts of fresh vegetables flooded my brain. And I thought: I guess that’s what I think when his name comes up.
He was a cool guy when we worked together years go, buying his first home; a 1 bed, 1 bath in Cully. His house closed about three months before my son was born.
Without prompting, my client dropped off a box of home-grown vegetables that was like the bounty of Eden. Green, red, leafy, crunchy – still warm from the sun.
Of course I’d never forget such a lovely gesture. We’d been in touch over the years. But that’s how I see this guy. Warm, crunchy, and sweet.
He dug up his back yard farm before selling – he’s on to the next adventure gathering no moss .
I love this job and I’m thankful to be able to work with people I like.
