Tillamook Creamery, a Dairy Lovers Paradise

Welcome to an Oregon staple, the newly rebuilt Tillamook Creamery in Tillamook, OR. This creamery on the Oregon coast is a dairy enthusiast’s dream come true. With 38,500 square feet of behind-the-scenes cheesy goodness to explore, you could easily spend hours here learning about all the hard work that goes into your favorite dairy products.

A great place to bring the whole family, Tillamook offers free, self-guided tours through the facility. You’ll learn a little of Tillamook’s history (all 100+ years!) and some fun dairy facts for your next party. For example, Tillamook processes 1.6 million pounds of milk a day. A DAY! All that milk is made into something delicious within 24 hours, ensuring all of their products are as fresh as they can be. At the Farm Exhibit, you can let the kids run wild. They’ll see how the farmers care for the cows, how the milk is collected, and some of the modern technology that is improving how dairy cows are cared for. The kids can even try their hand at “feeding” a calf, and “milking” a cow on their own.

Next up is the viewing deck, where you can learn all about the actual cheese production. Watch as the cheesemakers test for the quality of the cheese, or watch them weigh and seal the blocks for aging. You’ll get a little taste of the entire process here. Another fun fact, Tillamook has some very special cheddars that are aged for 4+ years!

Check out the great gift shop, where you can spend your very own cheddar on Tillamook gear of all sorts. You’ll want to stock up on the freshest cheese curds (buy 2 bags, trust me), and that fancy aged white cheddar. If at this point you’re craving something melty, cheesy, and delicious, you should absolutely stop by the dining hall. Find the best grilled cheese, juicy burgers, macaroni and cheese, fried cheese curds, and more. End the tour with the all-time champion of dairy, ice cream. Here you might even be able to sample new flavors before they hit stores.

So if you are looking for a really gouda time, check out the Tillamook Creamery. Puns obviously required.

Cedar Mill’s Best Kept Secret, Haven Coffee Co.

I think it’s safe to say all of us are very excited to start exploring local businesses IN PERSON again. After a long year of working remotely, I’ve been drinking a lot of sub-par coffee from home. I am ready to dive into the wonders of hand-crafted lattes, iced cold brews, and for those days when I wish I could hook up an IV of caffeine right into my veins, I want a triple americano!

Enter, Haven Coffee Co. A Cedar Mill gem that’s well worth the drive, even if you aren’t lucky enough to be in their neighborhood. The recently remodeled space is super sleek, with plenty of outdoor seating. It’s the perfect place to catch up on emails, or to get through a few chapters of that book you’ve been meaning to read.

Haven Coffee is a multi-roaster shop, which means you get to try coffee from a rotating selection of new roasters every season. Special consideration is given to organic, natural, Oregon-based companies. They have some really incredible flavor combos on their menu, like the Smoky Maple Latte.  If tea is your thing, try the Portland Fog, made with lavender rose white tea, rose water syrup, and steamed milk. You can get Brew Dr. on tap here, and they also sell “batched drinks”. That means you can get 64oz of chai latte goodness to take home and share. (Or not, I won’t tell!)

So when you’re ready to venture out and find a new favorite hang out, Haven should be at the top of your list. Keep your eyes peeled for a couple of dino friends around the shop too!

A Perfect Day in Portland’s Portsmouth Neighborhood

Nestled in the northern peninsula between St. Johns and Kenton, Portland’s Portsmouth neighborhood feels like a long-held secret between friends. Established as a subdivision in 1883, Portsmouth has retained its residential essence and old-town spirit. Locals and tourists alike can get a sense of what ‘keeps Portland weird’ by spending a day in Portsmouth.

MORNING

Starting the day out at Willamette’s End is high on our list of recommendations. This coffeehouse delivers equally on sustenance and ambiance, and you can enjoy your food from a charming bar table that looks out into the neighborhood. Alternately, you might opt for a more vintage Portland experience from nearby No Wave Coffee. No Wave Coffee is something of a 90s coffeehouse throwback, featuring affordable, unfussy faire and a DIY edge. It’s also uniquely communal, with a record player that patrons often use to play their personal collections. If you feel up for a walk, you can reach an incredible overlook within 10-15 minutes from Willamette’s End Coffee and within 15-20 minutes from No Wave Coffee. Heading southeast along Lombard, turn right to cross walk through the neighborhood, following residential streets to Columbia Park & Annex, then carefully crossing Willamette Boulevard to reach the look out.

AFTERNOON

Offering weekly events and gatherings that are frequented by the community, Portland’s Portsmouth neighborhood operates like a small town. One of these popular events is the Saturday flea market. A particularly elusive market, there is often a mind-boggling inventory to sort through, ranging from electronics, vintage goods, and even household care items.

Another Portsmouth gem is the Columbia Pool, which is one of only five pools that the city operates year-round. You can enjoy a dip during Open Swim hours from 1-5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors may also enjoy an excursion to nearby Heron Lakes Golf Club, which is a 12-minute drive from central Portsmouth. Also in this vicinity is Historic Vanport, the site of Portland’s lost city which overlooks the Columbia Slough.

Along Portsmouth’s main stretch, you’ll find enjoyable lunch options such as East Side Delicatessen and The Fishwife. You’ll also find Peninsula Odd Fellows Lodge, which has long served as the central gathering space in North Portland and now features The Museum of Odd History.

NIGHTTIME

In our opinion – there is only be one way to end a perfect night in Portland’s Portsmouth neighborhood, and that’s with amateur wrestling. North Portland’s Blue Collar Wrestling League has performed for an

enthusiastic audience every Sunday for the past seven years. Locals fill the unassuming North Portland Eagles Lodge facility for an affordable, but raucous night of high-drama. The venue does serve food and beverages, but you can also stop by Chef Zhao or Flying Pie Pizzeria for dinner. Alternately, you can enjoy more of the local flavor at Twilight Room, a dive bar beloved by Portsmouth’s residents.

Portland’s Portsmouth neighborhood mostly flies below the radar, but its rich history and strong sense of community make it area every Portlander should explore. Contact us directly to learn more about this up-and-coming area, or to schedule a tour of available Portsmouth homes.
