Experience Oregon Wine Country the Hood River Way

Maybe you’re looking for a weekend away from responsibilities with friends, or maybe you’re just trying to get through the outdoorsy family vacation that Aunt Jill planned. Checking out these spots will leave you with a memorable experience. 

  • Philips Creek Vineyards: Enjoy a customized picnic basket featuring a bottle of red or white and some tasty snacks on Lynette’s Lavender patch at Philips Creek Vineyards. Take a moment for yourself and enjoy the stunning views of Mount Hood. 
  • Hood Crest Winery & Distilleries: Be the hero of your group and have dinner ready when the adventurers come back with Hood Crest Winery & Distilleries’ Take & Bake options. Pop their homemade frozen Lasagna in the oven, and while you wait enjoy a glass of their 2013 Malbec. Featuring blackberries, the inky legs of this wine are sure to brighten up your evening. 
  • Full Sail Brew Pub: Maybe wine isn’t your thing, and you’re just looking for a cold one to warm you up on your morning hike. Stop by Full Sail Brew Pub and pick up a pack! Feel the power as you push mile 5 with their seasonal double IPA brew, Haze of the Gods, or enjoy the downhill trek back with their Blood Orange Hefeweizen. 
  • Marchesi Vineyards: Okay, but let’s be honest, we can’t all be IPA Bros, and you’re in wine country after all! Maybe you’re celebrating with that special someone, and what better way to celebrate than with a little bit of bubbly. Marchesi Vineyards has you covered with a nice Glera grape Prosecco all the way from Veneto, Italy. 
  • Hood River Vineyards: Dessert wines have been baffling hosts for ages. What do you do with a sweet berry wine? Thankfully Hood River Vineyard has quite a few ideas for us! Pick up one of their bottles of Marionberry Port, a true staple in the PNW, and pour it over some ice cream for a Port Float or have the perfect charcuterie board with a bottle of their Pear Sherry.

Hood River or Bust…or Cully

Kyle and Angelique set out to find a unique home, one where they could get out of the city, and also set up their business. Hood River was calling their names. As designers, they had helped design a couple commercial building spaces in the city, so they had a chance to explore it pretty well. They also have a sailboat, so quick jaunts to the river sounded pretty appealing. Not to mention the idea of having a little more yard than what you typically find in Portland.

After a long search they found a great little house in Hood River that didn’t meet all of their needs, but enough. They went for it, and it didn’t work out. Someone else had gotten to it first. So, they kept looking.

That’s when they came across a unique property in Cully. It was on almost 1/2 an acre and it had an 1800 SF shop, which inadvertently was larger than the house. They started imagining what they could do with all of that space. Setting up their design business from there, and having plenty of other space to do what they wanted. Wanting a big yard and garden, they found they had plenty of room for it. And it was already full of well cared for pear and plum trees, grape vines, asparagus, and marionberries.

What struck me about this place for them was that they found something they didn’t fully know they were looking for, and in Cully, where they hadn’t really been looking. Their lives have been in Portland for many years, and they thought they were ready to venture out. They could have done that very easily. But instead they found a place to grow into, right in the city they already loved. They’re also still having a great time figuring out what to do with all of that shop space.
