Vegan eating, shopping, and living in Southeast Portland!

Where to get your (plant-based) munch on, broken down by quadrant: Part #2

We’re so excited to continue the Rose City tour with highlights from the Southeast – which is home to some of our top picks in all of Portland!
Known popularly for its cool & trendy vibe, you could certainly wander through the neighborhoods and discover any number of hip gastropubs and vegan delights. But if you want to live and eat like a local, read on for our personal recommendations and a couple of hidden gems!
We would be remiss if we did not give a special shoutout to Belmont Street. A lot may have changed since our Beloved Belmont post in 2019, but only for the better as it has become a veritable oasis of plant based culinary treasures!

Lilla

The only place to go when you are craving ethical Italian!
Where are they? 960 SE Madison Street
What do they offer?  The first fully vegan Italian restaurant since Portobello closed in 2016, Lilla is the creation of Indian-American chef Sanjay Chandrasekaran. Popularly known for his restaurant The Sudra (see Part 1 of the tour!), Chef Chandrasekaran prepares mouth-watering vegan temptations.
What do they value? Lilla is located in the spot where vegan Middle Eastern restaurant Tiny Aviv once sat. When Tiny Aviv closed, Chandrasekaran decided to continue the lease with a new concept, and Lilla was born! You can find the best Italian-style comfort foods, all while enjoying the fact that they are plant based and cruelty-free!

Mirisata

Vegan Sri Lankan dishes of EPIC proportion!
Where are they? 2420 SE Belmont Street
What do they offer? Fully plant-based menu (plus brunch!) in casual atmosphere with counter service.
What do they value? Mirisata is proud to be worker-owned. They do not have a traditional “head chef” but instead collaborate on every dish to make original creations! Loosely translated from Sinhala, the name means “spicy curry” – and while not everything on their menu is spicy, you can be sure each item will be packed with flavor!
Our favs? First of all, prepare yourself for HUGE portion sizes! Our lunch there lasted all week, and Kendall took some to her non-vegan parents – they loved it! You have to try the Dolphin-style Kottu and Polos Cutlets.

Obon Shokudo

Meatless takes on Japanese comfort food
Where are they? 720 SE Grand Ave
What do they offer? Feel-good Japanese homestyle favorites that hit the spot!
What do they value? Obon owners Humiko Hozumi and Jason Duffany started their vegan concept by selling in farmers markets, then to the Morrison Market food hall, and finally to their brick and mortar location! Homestyle food is very important to them, with lots of house-made fermented foods and broths inspired by Hozumi’s family recipes.
Our favs? Hands-down, the Kakiage and the Kenchinjiru! They even have FREE dog sushi!

Cultured Kindness

Vegan Cheese Shop
Where are they? 1217 SE Stark Street
What do they offer? Small-batch, ethically-sourced vegan cashew cheeses.
What do they value? From their website: Cultured Kindness conducts business as a socially responsible member of its community. Their mission is to spread ethical veganism by removing the obstacles that prevent people from choosing a vegan lifestyle. They believe that veganism is better for the planet, for individual health, and most certainly for the animals who suffer in the dairy industry.
Our favs? Cultured Kindness recently catered a Broker’s Open for us. We love the Mushroom Melt, as well as their cheese and cracker boards!

Norah

Succulent seasonal Thai and pan-Asian fare!
Where are they? 3801 SE Belmont Street
What do they offer? 100% plant based pan-Asian food and inspired cocktails, with a menu that rotates seasonally. Nan and Prae are from southern Thailand, and draw inspiration from the region. (Norah’s sister restaurant is vegan-friendly Mestizo!)
What do they value? Norah is woman-owned. “The name Norah refers to a traditional dance reserved for celebrations and community gatherings in Southern Thailand where Nan and Prae grew up. The dance is a symbol of community vitality. We hope to bring that same energy of togetherness to the food we serve.”
Our fav? The Cauliflower Curry is INCREDIBLE! (roasted cauliflower, house curry & pickles, jasmine rice)

Plus – Bakeries and Grocery Stores!

Shoofly Vegan Bakery & Cafe

Local, fresh-baked vegan treats and wholesale items
What do they offer? An amazing concept, combining café and wholesale bakery – you can stop in to have goodies made fresh daily, OR buy their treats wholesale to sell in your own establishment! Click here to see all of the locations that proudly sell Shoofly products!
What do they value? It’s really important to Shoofly to use as many locally sourced ingredients as possible. You can be assured that their treats are made IN Portland, and with love!

Cutiee Buys|Coffee Beer

Part convenience mart, part grocery store, everything delicious…and cute!

Where are they? 4138 & 4142 SE 42nd Ave
What do they offer? As the name might suggest, Cutiee Buys is a super cute convenience and grocery story…that’s ALL vegan! Next door at the iconic Coffee Beer, you’ll find…you guessed it…a selection of coffee and beer and plenty of tables indoors and outdoors to chat or simply relax.
What do they value? They value cuteness and kindness, and want everyone to feel welcome!

Even More Vegan Favorites!

Eat, drink, and be ethically merry!
**At 8 years old, I had a revelation that animals meant too much to me to eat….then one day, I lost my vegetarian way. Years later, as I learned more about the planet and her inhabitants, I realized that, just as I avoid fossil fuels, I needed to wean myself off of animal products. While not everyone is ready to go vegan, in a city with such amazing options, perhaps it’s time for Meatless Mondays, or hey, how about Meatless March! – Bonnie

This party is just getting started!!

A big congratulations to Jessica, Michael & Family!

Welp, it happened again folks. I had the privilege of working with fantastic clients and now I want to adopt them! Or, at least have them over for dinner :).

Jessica and Michael were referred to my teammate, Jasmine, and they were such a delight to work with. They came to us looking for a home in inner southeast Portland. They were moving from an area with limited walkability so location was very important to them. We did end up finding a lovely home in a great location but after a hard inspection, we sadly had to move on and look for a different home.

…And I’m so glad we did!

We found the cutest, most special home in Ladd’s Addition for the family! Everything about this purchase was wonderful and full of good vibes! I wish every buyer had the chance to experience a purchase like this one. Jessica and Michael are so head over heels for the neighborhood they have convinced Jessica’s parents to move here to enjoy all the goodness they are experiencing. We are looking forward to working with her parents and hoping for the same kind of magical purchase!

A Ladd’s Addition Neighborhood Affair

I have the best neighbors ever in Ladd’s Addition. We moved into our home 17 years ago, and had our first kid 11 years ago. Within 5 years of us moving in, most of our block turned over from old and aging folks to younger families with small kids. At one point, there were seven families with kids all within a five year range from youngest to oldest on our block. Our kids have grown up together, played together, laughed together, had block parties together, cried together and all the in-betweens. When they were younger, in the ages 4-8ish range, they would spend summer days moving back and forth between houses as a roving gang. Us parents never worried because we knew the kids were at someone’s house on the block. Only 2 families have moved over the last 10 years, and one didn’t move far. Throughout this whole time, the adults on our block have spent countless hours over the years doing impromptu happy hours, block parties and backyard hang outs.

Daniela is one of my longtime neighbors and her parents are getting older and have lived in North Portland for almost 15 years. Daniela’s family is very close, and for several years Daniela and her husband Alex have talked about buying a house near them for her parents to move into. This past spring, Daniela and her parents decided the time was right to make the move. I was thrilled and honored when they asked me to represent them on both listing the North Portland house and representing them for the house purchase. The plan was to sell her parents home and buy a new home for them within 5 minutes walking distance our houses.  Daniela was so sure this was going to happen- even the within 5 minutes walking distance part, that I never questioned if we could pull this off.

In late April, Daniela’s parents North Portland house was just about ready to list, and one month later in late May, we put that house on the market. Right before we listed that house, Daniela’s parents flew to Florida to stay with their other daughter for a few months while we worked on selling their longtime North Portland house and finding them a new house within 5 minutes walking distance from Daniela. Meanwhile, just days before her parents house went live, one of our other neighbors shared that a neighbor across the back alley from us was going to be putting their house on the market within the next couple of weeks. It sounded too good to be true, so the next evening Daniela, Alex and I marched over to the across the alley neighbors house and knocked on the front door. These other neighbors opened the door and first words out of my mouth were, “Daniela wants to buy your house.” It took a few minutes for the seller to get what we were saying, but once we explained it, he loved the idea. He said they had already signed a listing contract with an agent and the house was scheduled to go on the market in a couple of weeks, but I could contact his agent for more information. A couple of days after that visit I spoke with the sellers listing agent and the gist of it was the house was going on the market in a couple of weeks, and once it was on the market, we could submit an offer.

Back in North Portland, her parents house received a couple of fantastic over asking offers with great terms, and that house went pending with a great buyer. As it happened, the neighbors listed their house while I was on vacation in Mexico City, so one of my colleagues brought Daniela and her husband to see the house and it really was perfect for her parents. Because it was a cute true 3-bedroom house in Ladd’s Addition, it received multiple offers. We came in strong on price and terms, and because the sellers loved the idea of keeping the house in the Ladd’s Family, they accepted Daniela’s offer. The home inspection turned up some unfortunate issues and thankfully the sellers were understanding and agreed to a price reduction and a significant closing cost credit so Daniela and Alex could get work done on the house after closing. A couple of weeks ago Daniela’s parents house closed right on time, and then a couple of days ago, Daniela closed on the house behind her. The sellers are staying in the house through July, and in early August Daniela and Alex will have work done on the house so by mid-May when Daniela’s parents return to Portland, they can glide right into their new home.

Since Daniela won’t get the keys to the new  house for a few weeks, to celebrate, I did what we always do, I threw a little back yard party for Daniela which she hosted in her own yard and most of our neighbors joined in for a toast. Thinking back on it, the plan was so precise, that had I questioned whether or not it would work, I would have lost so much sleep worrying over whether a house would come on the market that met the criteria to make the plan happen. Thankfully I never questioned any of it and just as Daniela predicted, it all worked out just dandy.

Bad Movies, Good Cause

When I brag about Portland one of the things I mention are the many wonderful independent movie theaters. My friends will bemoan $15 tickets and over-priced under-sized popcorn while I think fondly of $5 Tuesdays and craft drinks at CineMagic.

These independent theaters have a steep hill ahead of them during the COVID crisis. They can’t open and they’re not what comes to mind first when you think “take-out.” Still, Portland loves its theaters. Watching them adapt and pivot during closure has been inspiring, moving, and often quite humorous.

From gift cards to take out concessions, our theaters are trying all sorts of things. Laurelhurst Theater keeps its marquee up to date with movie quotes and timely calls to justice. The Hollywood Theater, a non-profit itself, set up a drive-in and has ticketed exclusive streaming links to some new and classic movies. Still, my favorite has to be CineMagic’s fantastic new strategy.

While working in Ladd’s Addition with some clients recently, I noticed the CineMagic marquee: “Beer, Popcorn, and Bad Movies To Go”.

What a pitch!

Every Friday and Saturday from 5 to 9 you can stop by their door to pick up the Movie ‘Deal.’ which “includes Beer/Cider Pack of Your Choice, A Tub of Popcorn, A Candy, & A Randomly Chosen DVD that Probably Isn’t Good”. Apparently, the DVDs of dubious quality are cast offs from a similar promo at a friend’s theater in the suburbs.

These theaters make our neighborhoods so special. Give them some love if you can! Plus, a case of drinks, a bunch of snacks, and a bad movie you can own forever will still run you less than the same at a corporate theater.

It’s A Beautiful Day in the Ladd’s Addition Neighborhood

Kate and Chris were referred to me by one of my past clients who went to college with  Chris. We met and they showed me a map of where they wanted to live. Funnily enough, the boundaries just happened to correspond with the Ladd’s Addition boundaries plus a few blocks to the north. As experienced home renovators, they were willing to take on a project and willing to wait for the right house that met most of their wish list, with primary concerns being location, price and size of home. And since where they wanted to live was so specific and given how much homes cost in Ladd’s, they lead off with “we think it will take a long time and we are wiling to wait for the right house.” One of the main reasons they chose to work with me is because they knew that I live in Ladd’s and have for quite some time. After our meeting, a familiar little voice in my head chirped sarcastically in response to their thinking it would take a long time to find a house, “sure it will.” My inner voice only says that because the words “we think it will take a long time and we’re willing to wait” seem to be the magic phrase that triggers the universe to turn into a giant hiccuping blob that spits out the perfect house within a week or so.

Nine days after we met, a house that had been on the market in Ladd’s since the end of 2018 and all of 2019 came back on the market after taking a month off to re-group. The house was on the market so long was because it was overpriced by over $150,000 when it first came on the market, and then bore the scarlet stamp of “loser” the longer it sat on the market. And now it was back on the market with a new listing team and priced $20k lower then when it went of the market the month before. The house perfectly wonderful- it has great light, gorgeous hardwood floors, a layout that makes sense, and a dreamy dry basement- a rarity in Ladd’s Addition. There are a few layout quirks to the house- a wall was removed to open up one of the bedrooms to create a larger dining room, and to get to the second bedroom on the main floor you have to walk through one of the bedrooms, or go around the kitchen and the landing to the basement off the back of the house. But for the right buyer, those are very workable quirks. Located in a great location off the busy streets, there was no reason why the house should have been on the market so long other than it’s starting price and slow response to the market.

I emailed Kate and Chris the listing on a Thursday, and we made plans to see it the next day. And good thing we did because the listing team was hosting an open house that evening and while there, we got word from the broker hosting that the sellers just received an offer and would be looking at offers at 10am the next morning. Enamored with the home, Kate and Chris decided to go for it. We put in an offer the next morning and by noon on Saturday- less than 24 hours after they saw it, I got word that the seller accepted their offer. We did a 26 day close and on the day it closed and on closing day, I walked over to my new neighbor’s house and handed them their keys. So next time you know someone who wants to buy a house in Ladd’s Addition and thinks it will take a while, have them come to me and say those magic words.
