Join Aryne + Dulcinea as they welcome the new art of Kendall Steele. Kendall is a long time Portland resident who teaches and makes art locally. Stop by and say hi! The show will be available until the end of September at our northeast Living Room Office at 1401 NE Alberta Street.

Kendall’s work documents her fascination with the colors, patterns, and textures found in nature and her love of stories, particularly myths, fairy tales, and other fantastical narratives that point our consciousness towards what is beyond the visible world.

Working in pastel allows her to be nimble. Ideas can be worked into an existing composition spontaneously. Details can be purposefully vague or carefully articulated. Color and texture are easily transformed. Ideally in the end, the finished piece has not been transcribed from an original idea, it has evolved.

Jeff Boothe is a self-taught Portland artist who has been making art for over 30 years. Jeff works as a handyman expressly so he can paint. He paints with acrylics on large canvas, wood, or paper to create richly textured and vividly colorful works.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 30th 6:00 – 8:00 PM • 1401 NE Alberta Street

Kaitlyn Carr-Kiprotich married Gideon. Gideon is African and Kaitlyn is Caucasian; their marriage informs her studio practice, primarily collage and textile work. “Navigating Race and Ethnicity” is an ongoing series of paper collages depicting their daily interactions. The slow process of paper cut-outs allows ample time for self-reflection on her experiences of being in an interracial relationship. Some of the memories mulled over are pleasant, while others leave her feeling uncomfortable. Perhaps this is also true for the viewer. Because paper is something that many people have been familiar with since childhood, the material and simple renderings provide an approachable aesthetic to a complex subject. The mundanity of one image generates widely different reactions from viewers. Her goal is creating art that contributes to the dialogue on race and identity, and encourages others—whatever their background—to consider their history and experiences.

Robin Wilson’s Installation opens as part of Last Thursday, July 25th from 6-8pm at Living Room Realty’s NE Alberta Office.

Having grown up with art supplies in her hand, Robin Wilson found a sense of peace and calmness from creating art. Her beautiful work is done mostly freehand, using wood panels, acrylic paint, Micon pens, and resin. With each calming breath, Robin lets her thoughts wander as she draws one long stroke at a time, until the piece comes to life.

Ron Bunch is a Portland painter and collage artist. His show at Living Room is a collection of recent landscape paintings from actual locales and memory. His “remembered” landscapes are based on memories of growing up in Central Oregon and reference his life-long connection to place and experience. Close observation of the natural world is a constant source of inspiration to me. I photograph flowers that interest me and choose my favorite images to paint. Using the photos as a reference, I paint with the intent to reflect the gesture and details of the individual flowers. My utmost desire, however, is to capture the sublime beauty inherent in the flowers.
