Curb Appeal Vol. 9: Portland’s Historic Laurelhurst Neighborhood

THE HISTORY

The legacy of Portland’s historic Laurelhurst neighborhood began in 1850, when Congress passed the Donation Land Claim. This statute encouraged European immigrants to migrate west, providing a powerful incentive which granted eligible populations ownership of up to 640 acres of land. More than 7,400+ patents were issued, making it one of the most substantial public land sale policies in national history. Portland’s historic Laurelhurst neighborhood evolved as a direct result of this legislative initiative and was officially founded in 1909.

THE MARKET

One-hundred and ten years later, Laurelhurst is one of the most enviable and established neighborhoods in Portland. Of the approximately 4,600 Portlanders who reside in the area, more than 80% own their homes. Representing one of the highest percentages of home-ownership for any district city-wide, Portland’s historic Laurelhurst neighborhood is a consistently competitive market. Portland Monthly projects homes in this area sell for an average of $654,275 and last only 26 days on the market.
