Where to get your (plant-based) munch on, broken down by quadrant: Part #2
We’re so excited to continue the Rose City tour with highlights from the Southeast – which is home to some of our top picks in all of Portland!
Known popularly for its cool & trendy vibe, you could certainly wander through the neighborhoods and discover any number of hip gastropubs and vegan delights. But if you want to live and eat like a local, read on for our personal recommendations and a couple of hidden gems!
We would be remiss if we did not give a special shoutout to Belmont Street. A lot may have changed since our Beloved Belmont post in 2019, but only for the better as it has become a veritable oasis of plant based culinary treasures!
What do they offer? The first fully vegan Italian restaurant since Portobello closed in 2016, Lilla is the creation of Indian-American chef Sanjay Chandrasekaran. Popularly known for his restaurant The Sudra (see Part 1 of the tour!), Chef Chandrasekaran prepares mouth-watering vegan temptations.
What do they value? Lilla is located in the spot where vegan Middle Eastern restaurant Tiny Aviv once sat. When Tiny Aviv closed, Chandrasekaran decided to continue the lease with a new concept, and Lilla was born! You can find the best Italian-style comfort foods, all while enjoying the fact that they are plant based and cruelty-free!
What do they offer? Fully plant-based menu (plus brunch!) in casual atmosphere with counter service.
What do they value? Mirisata is proud to be worker-owned. They do not have a traditional “head chef” but instead collaborate on every dish to make original creations! Loosely translated from Sinhala, the name means “spicy curry” – and while not everything on their menu is spicy, you can be sure each item will be packed with flavor!
Our favs? First of all, prepare yourself for HUGE portion sizes! Our lunch there lasted all week, and Kendall took some to her non-vegan parents – they loved it! You have to try the Dolphin-style Kottu and Polos Cutlets.
What do they offer? Feel-good Japanese homestyle favorites that hit the spot!
What do they value? Obon owners Humiko Hozumi and Jason Duffany started their vegan concept by selling in farmers markets, then to the Morrison Market food hall, and finally to their brick and mortar location! Homestyle food is very important to them, with lots of house-made fermented foods and broths inspired by Hozumi’s family recipes.
Our favs? Hands-down, the Kakiage and the Kenchinjiru! They even have FREE dog sushi!
What do they offer? Small-batch, ethically-sourced vegan cashew cheeses.
What do they value? From their website: Cultured Kindness conducts business as a socially responsible member of its community. Their mission is to spread ethical veganism by removing the obstacles that prevent people from choosing a vegan lifestyle. They believe that veganism is better for the planet, for individual health, and most certainly for the animals who suffer in the dairy industry.
Our favs? Cultured Kindness recently catered a Broker’s Open for us. We love the Mushroom Melt, as well as their cheese and cracker boards!
What do they offer? 100% plant based pan-Asian food and inspired cocktails, with a menu that rotates seasonally. Nan and Prae are from southern Thailand, and draw inspiration from the region. (Norah’s sister restaurant is vegan-friendly Mestizo!)
What do they value? Norah is woman-owned. “The name Norah refers to a traditional dance reserved for celebrations and community gatherings in Southern Thailand where Nan and Prae grew up. The dance is a symbol of community vitality. We hope to bring that same energy of togetherness to the food we serve.”
Our fav? The Cauliflower Curry is INCREDIBLE! (roasted cauliflower, house curry & pickles, jasmine rice)
What do they offer? An amazing concept, combining café and wholesale bakery – you can stop in to have goodies made fresh daily, OR buy their treats wholesale to sell in your own establishment! Click here to see all of the locations that proudly sell Shoofly products!
What do they value? It’s really important to Shoofly to use as many locally sourced ingredients as possible. You can be assured that their treats are made IN Portland, and with love!
What do they offer? As the name might suggest, Cutiee Buys is a super cute convenience and grocery story…that’s ALL vegan! Next door at the iconic Coffee Beer, you’ll find…you guessed it…a selection of coffee and beer and plenty of tables indoors and outdoors to chat or simply relax.
What do they value? They value cuteness and kindness, and want everyone to feel welcome!

Eat, drink, and be ethically merry!
**At 8 years old, I had a revelation that animals meant too much to me to eat….then one day, I lost my vegetarian way. Years later, as I learned more about the planet and her inhabitants, I realized that, just as I avoid fossil fuels, I needed to wean myself off of animal products. While not everyone is ready to go vegan, in a city with such amazing options, perhaps it’s time for Meatless Mondays, or hey, how about Meatless March! – Bonnie

It’s not everyday that a first time home buyer can become a home owner thanks to a grant program. However, that is exactly how my client joined the real estate market. She was fortunate to qualify for the America’s Home Grant through Bank of America, which offers closing cost assistance of $7,500. The credit can be used towards non-recurring closing costs, (think title insurance and recording fees), and to buy down the interest rate on the loan. My buyer closed on her home this week with $0.00 in closing costs and a 30 year, fixed-rate mortgage at 2.75%!! The icing on the cake? The funds she received do not need to be repaid to the bank!
One caveat of the program is that the subject property must be in a low to moderate income tract. Each home is run through the bank’s system to check the income tract. Some qualify and some do not, meaning you are limited to certain areas of Portland. The competition for these homes can be fierce. After making an offer on a property that received 10+ offers within 1 day, my client was discouraged.
Thankfully, this summer turned out to be the height of the selling season and homes were coming on the market left and right. A home on the outskirts of Montavilla came on the market and it was perfect for her. It met the Bank’s requirements so we went to see it. The house has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, a lovely living room & updated kitchen. There is a back deck and a small yard. The attached garage is perfect for her car and storage. Thanks to America’s Home Grant, my client was able to beat out the other offers and offer over the asking price. This could not have happened without the closing cost assistance she was given.
As an agent, it is important to know the options for your clients so they are able to get into a home. This is a single woman, on her own becoming a HOME OWNER!!! I am so proud to have helped her through this process. If you or someone you know would like to learn more about how to become a home owner, contact me today! Congratulations to my awesome client – she now owns her own special piece of Portland.
This charming farmhouse is a harmonious blend of original vintage details with modern updates. Lovely hardwood floors provide a warm, soothing ambiance to the main floor. The large, open kitchen is ideal for preparing meals or preserving the backyard bounty from the raised garden beds and fruit trees. The upper level boasts a spacious master suite and 2 additional bedrooms with high ceilings. The large fenced yard has a patio that is perfect for entertaining! Just a few blocks from the Montavilla farmers market, the Stark St strip of local shops, cafes and restaurants.
Our client was an expert renter ready to find a home of her own. She knew Portland’s real estate market and architecture, neighborhoods and amenities. Dreaming of home ownership she dove into learning where she wanted to live and what her new home would be like. She wanted a place for herself and her partner to settle down, plant a garden, raise a family, build a community and create her own history. We searched the city far and wide from Woodlawn to Woodstock, Farmhouse to Four Square until magical Mt Tabor offered the perfect house, an historic home with mature trees, classic wood floors, charm, and light perfectly situated between Mt Tabor and Montavilla.
It’s a great time to buy and the market is calling! If you’re thinking about making a move, reach out today and let’s get started.

Tip top shape and lots of original character, this Mid Century Ranch speaks comfort. Possibilities abound with a fully permitted lower level guest suite, which includes a living room, kitchenette, bedroom and full bath. Adding to the perfection, the main floor boasts 2 beds, 1 bath, refinished hardwood floors, spacious knotty pine dining room, cozy living room with gas fireplace! Kitchen door leads to covered deck and patio, and one peaceful, delightfully landscaped fenced back yard. This impeccably maintained home invites you to move in with no stress. This house is pure bliss.
It was such a pleasure to help my clients find this super clean 2 bedroom 1 bathroom house in the Montavilla neighborhood. I hope they have many wonderful years to come in this sweet home.
When I think about the story of this purchase, I realize the center of this story is not the charming Montavilla ranch. This story is about my client, Russell. He is a first time home buyer, arborist, future Portland real estate mogul, and all around cool guy to know.
I met Russell when my neighbor recommended his tree company and was immediately impressed with his knowledge and passion for his work. I hired him for a job at my own home, and for every tree need I’ve had since. He is now my go-to person for all things tree and shrub related and I recommend him to everyone in my area.
I learned about his interest in real estate after he did a few projects at my house. Russell had a very focused idea of what he wanted. He wanted to buy a house he could live in comfortably for a few years. However, his end goal was to eventually turn this house into a rental. He is interested in building wealth through real estate and was ready to start building his portfolio! Russell has an investor’s mindset and an eye for what will make a good rental.
I’m happy to say that after touring lots of homes in southeast Portland, we found one that was perfect! After less than 10 hours on the market, we had toured and submitted an offer on this property. The 2 bedroom, 800 sqft home in Montavilla fits his criteria perfectly. A well maintained, move-in ready home, with easy access to freeways for commuting, within walking distance to shops and restaurants on Stark, an attached garage Russell can convert to a woodworking studio. (One of his talents is making, and teaching others to make, beautiful wooden spoons, butter knives, and serving ware.) The house is also on a spacious lot with room for a garden and, of course, some trees!
The sellers accepted Russell’s offer after waiting a few days to review all others that had come in. When writing his offer, he put his best foot forward because he knew this was the home he wanted. He didn’t want to miss out on such a great investment so he offered above asking, knowing the home was worth it. The sellers agreed to a small repair that needed doing, but the rest of the transaction was a breeze. We signed the closing docs on five years to the day he moved to Portland, and I couldn’t be more happy for him!

Montavilla is known as the quietly cool neighborhood in Southeast Portland. Centered on the commercial Stark/Washington couplet, the heart of it runs along SE Stark on what used to be street car tracks from 76th to 82nd.
Founded as Mount Tabor Village just before the turn of the century, its current name originates from an abbreviation used on that street car line: Mt. Ta. Villa. In addition to quietly cool people, Montavilla is home to shops, restaurants, watering holes, hardware stores, a university. In fact, Lonely Planet named it one of the “Top 10 Hot Hoods in the US you need to visit”. It is also home to the latest farmhouse we restored at 505 SE 76th Ave.
Well, TECHNICALLY she’s across the street from the Western border of Montavilla, but she has been sitting at the foot of Mt. Tabor with her full attention staring down the heart of Montavilla for nearly 120 years. And she’s seen it all, believe me. Births, deaths, family gatherings, life before Country Cat, you name it. A huge tree even tried to take her down at one point but nevertheless she persisted. Persisted just long enough to welcome us in, so we could restore her to (most) of her original glory.
Whitewashed from top to bottom but still in really great shape, the exterior just needed a few standouts. So we maintained the original color and added black trim around the windows and to the large concrete posts. The roof had very recently been replaced, so we had to work with a trim color that worked well. Starting there, we quickly got inspiration for our interior color scheme. Not pictured here is the brand new roof we put on the garage, which had rotted all the way through to its joists and sill plates. Not very glamorous but very necessary. We added a fence and stone patio in the backyard for instant BBQ privacy/fun.
The living and dining rooms required the least amount of serious work. We restored the original wood floors, and added a fresh coat (or two) of paint to the ceilings, walls, and moulding. Tying in the exterior black trim color in with the stair risers and hand rail made a big impact. And because there were no original light fixtures left in the house, we added period lighting that worked well with the era of the house.
The kitchen cabinets were original solid wood and in sturdy shape. All they needed was some freshening up. Staggered white 12” ceramic tile flooring was nicely accented with light gray grout, and we added maple butcher block countertops to warm it all up.
We made improvements to the TWO sunrooms off from the kitchen and master bedroom. For many years these had been used as storage rooms, so little attention had been given to them. The windows hadn’t been used to look out of, and the sunlight coming in didn’t matter. Facing West, it was important we recreate these two rooms because they add so much charm to the home, and are very functional spaces. Now these two rooms are the best places for languid summer afternoons with a good book and an even better ice cold beverage.
The main floor half bath and upstairs full bath got custom hex tile floors, efficient toilets, sinks and fresh paint. We also added all new water supply lines and sewer line to the house. Upstairs also got a brand new, gleaming subway tile surround. Very classic look for this beauty.
In order to gently nudge this old beauty in the 21st century, it was pretty clear early on that she’d need another bathroom. This had always been a family home and still now, she has room for more! Some spaces lend themselves easily to conversion. In this case, we converted the SE corner bedroom into the master bath and walk in closet, mixing vintage and modern. The 12” hexagonal tile pushes the design forward while an original clawfoot tub firmly (and very heavily) keeps it grounded in the turn of the century. The double vanity is a great mix of old and new, and the bedroom closet was easily turned into a private toilet room.
If you’re interested in checking out this Mount Tabor Village beauty, she’s still at the foot of Mt Tabor staring down Stark street, looking for new dwellers to call her home. You can check out the listing, price and see more pictures here.
And if you want to see Montavilla in all it’s glory, consider checking out the Montavilla Street fair on Sunday, July 29, 2018. More information here.

Portland’s Montavilla neighborhood first developed in the late 19th century, when the addition of a streetcar route established the area as a stomping ground for Portland-bound travelers. Mount Tabor Village has since been dubbed Montavilla, becoming a hot spot for residents and tourist alike. Easy walkability and old-town authenticity make the neighborhood a great destination, with renowned parks and plentiful charm-filled local establishments to while away the time. Here are our suggestions for a perfectly balanced day in Montavilla.
MORNING
Like a true Portlander, you’ll want to start this day off with coffee. If you’re in the central hub of the Montavilla neighborhood, you’ll likely be only a few minutes from Hungry Heart PDX. Here, you’ll find Stumptown coffee blends and a comprehensive selection of baked goods geared toward an adult palette. While you’re here, grab a coffee and some macrons to fuel up – there’s a busy day ahead of you.
From Hungry Heart PDX, it’s a brisk 13-minute walk to nearby Mount Tabor, a big park with an even bigger reputation as one of only four, city-based volcanoes in the U.S. Its sweeping views span across the eastside to reveal Downtown Portland, providing the perfect backdrop to enjoy fresh coffee and baked goods.
AFTERNOON
Exploring Mount Tabor’s 636-feet of steep elevation is no easy feat. Fortunately, your reward is close by as Montavilla is home to some of Portland’s favorite brunch destinations. For traditional southern-inspired cuisine, The Country Cat is your go-to. Their rich menu and sizable portions are likely to hit the spot following a stroll through Tabor; however, there are equally delicious options for individuals craving lighter fare. Located only a five-minute walk from Tabor’s NE exit, Coquine serves seasonal, regionally-inspired menus in the style of New American cuisine. The location also delivers on ambiance, providing the perfect backdrop to a leisurely day on the town.
Continuing on your exploration of Portland’s Montavilla neighborhood, there are numerous activities to enjoy next. Open Sundays from 10-2, Montavilla Farmers Market is a great way to learn about the area’s agricultural offerings, sample beer and wine from local makers, and engage with neighborhood organizations. Additionally, groups may enjoy spending time at Montavilla Community Center & Pool, gaming at Creature VR or slamming baseballs at Batting A Thousand. Finally, we recommend a visit to Escapism Portland, an hour-long live action room escape game. The facility features a narrative which suits groups of up to 6, and requires participants to schedule ahead of time. Aim for an early evening slot, which will put you right near to your next destination.
EVENING
Leaving Escapsim Portland, you’ll be only a minute walk from Blank Slate. Cozy décor and a carefully curated record collection elevate this intimate space. The menu here is a practice in restraint and feels unified its focus, boasting artfully compiled cocktails and small dishes.
LATE NIGHT
You could easily spend the rest of your night enjoying cold beverages and retro tunes while sitting at the bar at Blank Slate, but there is still time to fit in one more Portland staple: a second-run movie theater. The historic Academy Theater is central to the Montavilla neighborhood both in location and spirit. Featuring $4 tickets, beer, and locally-focused food menu which includes pizza and sushi, The Academy is the perfect place to end your perfect day in Montavilla.
