Kol Peterson, a Portland-based and nationally renowned expert on accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, was recently featured in the The Atlantic describing the rise in popularity of these housing options and the value they can add to a home, as well as how they can increase affordable housing stock. I attended a day-long workshop by Kol in December and it was a great learning experience.
You’ve likely seen ADUs around town – whether stand-alone units, garage conversions, or conventional additions. ADUs can add significant value to a property by creating potential short- or long-term rental units that can provide steady cash flow. Homes with ADUs already built command a premium on resale, and infill policies in Portland continue to support this style of housing.
If you’re looking for more flexibility with your housing options, including supplemental income or live/work spaces, ADUs are a fantastic option to consider.
Kol just released a new book called Backdoor Revolution last month, and he offers another day-long workshop on April 21st in NE Portland. Learn more HERE.
